Casi Cielo! (Flamenco Style Coffee)

In my last post, I talked about a lighter roast of coffee called Veranda. I feel bad starting out with such an awful coffee that I have decided to jump to something amazing and awesome in order to make up for it. So, without further ado, I present you with one of my favorite blends: Starbucks’ Casi Cielo.

Casi Cielo is a wonderfully rich blend of beans. It originates from Guatemala and is claimed by Starbucks to be such a great coffee that they gave it a name which translates to “Almost heaven”. The description given by Starbucks states that Cielo will have undertones of lemon and dark cocoa. With this in mind, I sped over to the nearest grocery store and grabbed a bag of assorted Ghirardelli chocolates and began my exploration into this Spanish heaven contained in the coffee.

While thinking about the origins of Cielo, I attempted to think of a good blend of music to go with the coffee. With the descriptions, the one thing that kept popping up in my mind was Antonio Banderas, a smooth, classy Spaniard who has the same appeal to the ladies (and some gentleman as well) as chocolate does. Lo and behold, there is a video of Mr. (er. I mean Sr) Banderas playing guitar from the movie "Once Upon A Time In Mexico".

And thus began my first sip of “almost heaven.”

The result was something along the lines of this.
My mind was blown. I loved it. I wanted the coffee materialize into a Spanish women so I could take her flamenco dancing to the music inspired by this tasting. It was indeed “almost heaven”. The combination of the Ghirardelli chocolates  added to the chocolate texture and as I continued to consume both the chocolate and the coffee simultaneously, I slowly fell in love with this dark, mysterious coffee from Guatemala.

  1. For some reason when I click on "this" the link fails. I don't know if it is because of my internet connection, but you should double check just in case. I like the character Johnny Depp played in "Once Upon A Time In Mexico." I think he played the role very well. Too bad your coffee didn't materialize into Salma Hayek.

  2. Now this makes me want to try a cup of joe! I like the idea that chocolate can make it taste better. Plus, "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" is a great movie and if I can take a sip, close my eyes and see Johnny Depp, before he loses his eyes, then I'm all about it! Do you typically take your coffee with cream, sugar, milk, or black? I usually take my tea with soy, how do you think that would pair up with this coffee?

    1. When I drink coffee, it really depends on the blend I'm drinking and how I plan to enjoy it. If I'm doing something like Cielo which stands on its own two feet without the cream, I'll typically go without, but I do use cream if the coffee has a high acidity (bitter nasty taste/aftertaste). But if you're just starting out as a coffee drinker, I would suggest cream with every cup because it helps to mellow out some of the harsher notes of the coffee.
Soy is actually an excellent pairing with coffee, especially ones such as Cielo which have those chocolatey undertones. I would recommend the Silk soy milk with vanilla flavor (I think that exists, Starbucks used to use Silk until they started making their own soy).

  3. Antonio Banderas is the man and I love that movie! I am very upset that I've been drinking Starbucks forever and never have heard of "almost heaven." Im so excited about this that I will go to classes early tomorrow and partake in the yumminess. Thank the lord for a Starbucks on campus.

Pictures would make this blog famous dude. Just a suggestion homes, see you manana.
